Ice House Hill Farm Preserved

Ruth Bass

Updated: Mar 4, 2022

The former Malnati Farm on East Road, now known as Ice House Hill Farm, has been preserved from development by its owners. Working with Berkshire Natural Resources Council, they have placed the farm under a conservation restriction that will allow the acreage to be farmed.

The Richmond Land Trust has long been interested in seeing development restricted on that acreage because of its scenic vistas. In May, its sweeping meadows are a nesting site for bobolinks, easily seen from the RLT bench at East and Reservoir roads. From Swamp Road, many have admired the herd of Herefords grazing on the steep hill or close to Lenox Road.

The pie social sponsored by RLT was hosted at the farm years ago by the Malnati family and more recently by the present owners, giving Richmond residents a chance to take in the view to the town’s western hills.
